Environment & Surroundings
Dourdou Valley
The Dourdou de Conques rises in the Ségala and meanders for more than 80 km before joining the Lot. Over millennia, its course has shaped a verdant valley of wooded slopes, meadows and hilltop villages.
The river has also carved deeply into the limestone plateau of the Causse Comtal. The most spectacular feature is surely the “Trou de Bozouls”, a natural horseshoe‑shaped cirque nearly 400 meters across and 100 meters deep, sculpted by erosion. This impressive site — a real canyon in the heart of the village — testifies to the power of geological forces in Aveyron.
Today, the valley offers riverside walks, sweeping viewpoints over the cliffs, and a sky of rare purity: generous light by day and protected starry nights ideal for stargazing.
The Rougier de Marcillac
This small natural region is shaped by red sandstone which colors villages and hillsides, and enjoys a particularly mild micro‑climate favorable to vines and fruit trees. Terraced vineyards form a luminous mosaic landscape.
Conques
Unmissable medieval village, listed abbey‑church, key stop on the Camino de Santiago.
Marcillac‑Vallon
AOC vineyard of Fer Servadou (“Mansoi”), rich traditions and red‑sandstone scenery.
Villecomtal
Charming village of the valley: heritage, lanes, market and family strolls.
Salles‑la‑Source
Hilltop village famed for its magnificent multi‑tiered waterfall, troglodyte buildings and 12th‑century Romanesque church.
Rodez
Department capital with a rich cultural life: Gothic cathedral, several museums (including the Soulages Museum) and a characterful old town.
Belcastel
One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, medieval castle overlooking cobbled streets.
Peyrusse‑le‑Roc
Striking medieval site with two high towers on a rocky spur, castle ruins, a Gothic bridge and many remains.
Estaing
Exceptional village with a 13th‑century castle, UNESCO‑listed Gothic bridge and Renaissance houses in a bucolic setting.
Entraygues‑sur‑Truyère
At the confluence of the Lot and the Truyère: Gothic bridge, fortress and picturesque lanes.
Espalion
Old houses along the Lot, Château de Calmont d’Olt above the valley, and a key step on the Camino.
Aubrac Plateau
Volcanic and granitic plateau (Natura 2000) with wild landscapes, glacial lakes and traditional “burons”.
Did you know?
The word “Viguerie” comes from the Latin “vicaria”, meaning “representative”. In medieval times, a viguerie was a small local jurisdiction headed by a viguier who administered daily justice on behalf of the count.
Thus, “Gîte de la Viguerie” evokes the house of the viguier — a historical nod to the region’s past.
